By Ashwin Kumar

SHAH ALAM, May 6 — The state government will be contributing RM10,000 to the family of the late Corporal Safwan Muhammad Ismail, says Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

The Selangor Menteri Besar said the tragedy that befell Safwan, who was attached to the Kajang district police headquarters, was an honourable sacrifice for the country.

“The state administration has agreed to provide financial assistance of RM10,000 to the family members of late Safwan.

“Allahyarham (late Corporal Safwan) had lost his life while on duty. This will be remembered as a sign of the sacrifices made by our frontliners who are trading their lives for the wellbeing of others.

“The state government would like to express its gratitude to the late Safwan. May God bless his soul and have mercy upon him,” Amirudin said in a statement today.

In the incident at 2.11am on Sunday, Safwan, 31, was killed on the spot when a four-wheel-drive Toyota Hilux, driven by a suspected drunk driver, ran over him when he was manning a roadblock at the Kajang Selatan toll plaza of the Kajang-Seremban Highway (Lekas).

The suspect is remanded and police have opened investigations papers under Section 304 of the Penal Code for causing the policeman’s death by negligence and also under Section 22 (b) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 for defying the movement control order.
