FAM accepts decision on status of 2020 M-League

KUALA LUMPUR, May 1 — The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has accepted the decision made at the Special Ministerial Meeting on the Implementation of the movement control order (MCO) which, among others, discussed issues regarding the status of the 2020 Malaysia League (M-League).

However, the full details of the meeting were not disclosed.

The decision was conveyed by Youth and Sports Minister (KBS) Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican to FAM president Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin and Malaysian Football League (MFL) chief executive officer Datuk Ab Ghani Hassan at a meeting held at the ministry yesterday.

Reezal Merican also advised them based on the decision made at the Special Ministerial Meeting, which was chaired by Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is also the Defence Minister.

The latest development, which local football fans have been anxiously waiting for, was also shared by Reezal Merican on his Twitter account, @reezal_merican.

“Met the FAM president and MFL CEO today (yesterday) to convey to them the advice and decision of the Special Ministerial Meeting on the Implementation of the MCO that was chaired by the Defence Minister today (yesterday) as a reference for FAM and MFL,” he tweeted.

On Wednesday, Ismail Sabri confirmed having received an official application from FAM to resume the local league.

FAM and MFL have suspended all their football activities since March 16 following the Covid-19 pandemic as well as in compliance with the MCO.

Several countries, among them South Korea, Italy and Germany which have a higher number of Covid-19 infections compared to Malaysia, have already started relaxing rules regarding their professional football leagues.
