MB: Selangor aims to be key player in aerospace industry by 2030

SHAH ALAM, May 18 — The Selangor government has formulated the Selangor Aerospace Action Plan 2020 – 2030, which would foresee the development of the aerospace industry in the state as it aims to become the key player in the industry globally by 2030.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari had announced the state’s maiden action plan for the aerospace sector that targets several areas including infrastructure, incentive, funding, education and training, regulations as well as market access.

He said the action plan, which was approved by the Selangor State Council Metting in last October, is a three-phase plan consisting of short-term (one to three years), medium-term (four to seven years), and long-term (eight to 10 years).

“The state government has also formed a special unit under Invest Selangor Berhad, Selangor Darul Ehsan Aerospace Industry Coordination Office (S-Daico), to empower the aerospace industry and coordinate the implementation of the 10-year action plan.

“The action plan was aimed for the continuous development of the eco-system industry and making Selangor a prime destination for the aerospace sector,” said Amirudin at a media briefing held at the Selangor state secretariat building (SUK), here today.

Also present were Selangor state secretary Datuk Mohd Amin Ahmad Ahya, Selangor State Finance officer Datuk Nor Azmie Diron, State Investment, Industry and Trade, Small and Medium Industries Committee chairman Datuk Teng Chang Khim, Selangor deputy state secretary Dr Nor Fuad Abdul Hamid, and Invest Selangor Berhad chief executive officer Datuk Hasan Azhari Idris.

Amirudin said S-Daico will be at the frontline in helping the industry players by providing information, advisory services as well as potential investment opportunities.

“S-Daico, which acts as the secretariat of the Selangor Aerospace Council, is also expected to help the state government in putting together a post-Covid-19 aerospace development plan, as the industry is one of the industries most impacted by the global pandemic.

“This effort is vital in facilitating industry players to ensure Selangor remains an attractive investment destination for local and foreign investors.

“Other roles include streamlining the development of aerospace projects as well as monitoring the management of projects and disbursed financial allocations, promote Selangor as the prime investment and trade destination in aerospace as well as attract foreign direct investment while helping the transformation of the local companies, and also to promote the small and medium business that is directly or indirectly involved in the industry,” he said.

Amirudin said in 2017, the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) activity is the second largest contributor in the industry with RM6.2 billion contributed while manufacturing activities contributed RM6.6 billion in the national revenue.

Selangor houses 62 per cent of the total 230 aerospace companies in Malaysia and home of over 20 institutions of higher learning and colleges which offer aerospace-related training.
