Cheras apartment cluster probably stemmed from Aidilfitri visits

PUTRAJAYA, June 2 — The cause of the spread of the new Covid-19 cluster, the Cheras Apartment cluster, is likely to be due to home visits before and during Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the actual cause which has resulted in the cluster was still being investigated.

Elaborating on the cluster he said, the first case was detected through screening of students of a tahfiz centre, which was conducted in collaboration with the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) and the Health Ministry (MOH).

“However, investigations showed that none of the students, teachers, or staff members at the centre had a history of attending the tabligh rally in Seri Petaling.

“So far there are six cases from this cluster, three are residents at the apartment while three others are not living in the vicinity, “ he told the daily Covid-19 media conference here today.

Yesterday, the MOH via Twitter, informed the detection of the new cluster.

Dr Noor Hisham said it was through active case detection that all of them were found to be infected and the positive cases were family members and friends of the first case.

“So far, 120 people have been identified and screened, six of whom were Covid-19 positive, 76 were tested negative, and the result on 38 others, still pending,” he said.

Dr Noor Hisham said in addition to the active case detection measure, several preventive steps have been taken at the apartment block, among them contact isolation and sampling, carrying out disinfecting and sanitising activities as well as creating awareness on prevention of Covid-19 infection.
