KUALA LUMPUR , June 23 — Today’s Covid-19 single digit cases, with three new occurrences, involved only local transmissions.
The new cases recorded were among the lowest numbers after only two new cases on June 10 and no deaths were recorded, maintaining the death toll at 121.
Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the increase in new cases brought the total number of cumulative Covid-19 cases in Malaysia to 8,590 cases.
“Therefore, the total number of active and infectious Covid-19 cases is 283 cases. They have been isolated and treated.
“All the new cases reported are only domestic cases, namely, two non-citizens and one citizen while no import cases have been reported,” he said in a statement today.
Detailing the new cases, Dr Noor Hisham said one was from the Pedas cluster in Negeri Sembilan involving a non-Malaysian while the other two cases were related to the “home death” cluster involving a Malaysian and a foreigner who were family members of case 8,506.
He said nine patients had recovered and were discharged today, bringing the total number of recoveries to 8,186 cases or 95.3 percent of the case tally.
Thus far, he said, three Covid-19 cases are being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU), but none are in need of ventilator support.
Dr Noor Hisham also said that the church convention cluster in Kuching, Sarawak, which was detected on March 15 involving five generations from various areas in the state, ended today.
He said for that cluster, a total of 2,751 individuals had been screened, with 191 positive cases detected; 12 cases were treated at the ICU, and involved three deaths, namely case No 358 (second death), case No 2471 (37th death) and case No 2864 (67th death).
“The MOH (Ministry of Health) congratulates the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) as well as the personnel who provided their services in all activities related to this cluster,” he said.
He added that until today there were 1,712 cases involving individuals aged 18 years and below, which is 19.9 percent of the case tally.
He explained that there were no fatalities or cases in the ICU that involved those in the said age group, thus showing that this particular group had a better rate of recovery.
In view of tomorrow’s reopening of schools for students who would sit for public and equivalent international examinations, Dr Noor Hisham also reminded parents, students and school staff to cooperate to ensure there is no transmission of Covid-19 in schools.
“The reopening of schools is subject to stipulated standard operating procedure (SOP) and guidelines. Comply with the guidelines, including practising good personal hygiene and social distancing at all times, whether in or outside the school compound,” he said.
