Environmental protection expenditure up 4 pct in 2018

PUTRAJAYA, June 3 — Environmental protection expenditure for 2018 registered an annual growth of four per cent to RM2.7 billion compared to 2017, according to the Environmental Protection Survey Report 2019.

The survey referencing the year 2018 shows that operating expenditure accounted for the bulk of the figure at 73 per cent, with 27 per cent going to capital expenditure.

Commenting on the report, Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said pollution management topped the expenditure at RM1.835 billion or 68.1 per cent, followed by RM726.1 million (26.9 per cent) for waste management and RM91.6 million (3.4 per cent) for assessment and environmental charges.

Mohd Uzir said the manufacturing sector dominated the total environmental expenditure in 2018, contributing RM1.82 billion or 67.5 per cent, followed by mining and quarrying at RM305.5 million (11.3 per cent) and services at RM293.9 million (10.9 per cent).

Among states, Selangor spent the most on environmental protection with RM500.6 million or 18.6 per cent, followed by Johor and Kuala Lumpur with RM326.5 million (12.1 per cent) and RM325.2 million (12.1 per cent) respectively, and Negeri Sembilan with RM292.3 million (10.8 per cent).

“The four states contributed 53.6 per cent of the total expenditure,” he said.
