RMCO first day sees smooth traffic on main highways

KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 — Traffic flow on several major highways and at toll plaza exit heading out of the capital city this morning was smooth, on the first day of the recovery movement control order (RMCO) which saw the interstate travel ban lifted from today.

A check by Bernama found traffic at the Jalan Duta toll plaza north-bound, Sungai Besi toll plaza south-bound and Gombak toll plaza were smooth-flowing as at 11.30 am.

Bukit Aman traffic investigation and enforcement director Datuk Azisman Alias said the number of vehicles might increase gradually throughout this week following the government’s announcement on the interstate travel.

“There will probably be a gradual increase of vehicles by this weekend because some may want to visit their loved ones after staying at home for so long.

“Nevertheless, the RMCO regulations such as social distancing and the limit on the number of people at a gathering must be observed as the police will continue to monitor public compliance of the standard operating procedures,” he told Bernama.

Azisman advised the public not to be too excited just because the ban has been lifted and if there was no immediate need, they should refrain from going back to their hometowns.

He said constant monitoring would go on and strict action would be taken against road users who go against the law.

“Do not ignore the law and traffic rules. Avoid speeding, beating red lights, jumping queues, or misusing the emergency lanes as the police will not compromise and will be issuing summonses as speed cameras will be everywhere,” he said.

He added that the RMCO conditions and the new norm must be practised as the Covid-19 pandemic is far from over.

Meanwhile, a Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) spokesperson said traffic flow on major highways such as the PLUS Expressway, East Coast Highway (LPT) 1 and LPT2, as well as the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway (KLK) had been smooth and there were no reports of traffic congestion.

However, heavy traffic flow was reported at a few places namely, from Gopeng to Simpang Pulai, Bertam to Sungai Petani (South), Ayer Keroh to Jasin and Senai to Kulai.

“As of this morning, the traffic flow had been smooth including on highways heading out to the east coast,” he said.

Last Sunday, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin announced that the conditional MCO (CMCO) will be replaced with the RMCO starting today (June 10) until August 31.

Apart from finally lifting the ban on interstate travel, several activities which had been prohibited earlier during the CMCO, are now allowed under the RMCO.
