Social events, weddings allowed with maximum 250 guests beginning July 1

SHAH ALAM, June 24 — Social gatherings, including wedding receptions and engagement ceremonies, will be allowed beginning July 1, subject to several conditions, says Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The Senior Minister (Security Cluster) said the events, which includes social religious and cultural gatherings as well as reunions, can only have a maximum number of 250 attendees.

“The events can only be held between three to five hours.

“The capacity of attendees is capped at 250 people, which would also depend on the size of the venue. If the venue is small and can only accommodate 150 people and would make it difficult to observe social distancing, then the number of attendees would have to be adjusted accordingly,” the minister said at a press conference on security issues related to Covid-19 in Putrajaya today.

Ismail said that food can only be served buffet-style and managed by the caterers, hosts or waiters to avoid guests from taking their own food.

“The food should be served by the caterers and it is best if the meals could be served on the table,” he added.

Earlier this month, the Federal government had permitted marriage solemnisation (nikah) ceremonies to resume with no more than 20 people attending, excluding the bride and groom and the imam.

This was then followed by the permission given for non-Muslim wedding ceremonies to be held, which is also limited to 20 attendees as well.
