June CPI declines 1.9 pct in June 2020

KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 — Malaysia’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) declined 1.9 per cent in June 2020 from a year earlier, driven mainly by the transport component that slipped 14.3 per cent, Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said today.

“The decrease in the overall index was driven by the decline in transport (-14.3 per cent), housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (-2.6 per cent), clothing and footwear (-1.1 per cent) and furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance (-0.2 per cent) which contributed 45.7 per cent to overall weight,” said Chief Statistician Malaysia, Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin.

In a statement, he said, CPI without fuel is at a positive rate of 0.2 per cent in June 2020 as compared with 0.1 per cent in May 2020.

CPI without fuel covers all goods and services except Unleaded Petrol RON95, Unleaded Petrol RON97 and Diesel.

Mohd Uzir said the lower average price of RON95 in June 2020, at RM1.54 per litre as compared to RM2.08 in June last year, contributed to the decrease of the Transport and overall index.

In addition, the average price of RON97 decreased to RM1.84 per litre as compared to RM2.51 while Diesel declined to RM1.71 per litre from RM2.18 in the corresponding month of the preceding year, he said.

On a monthly basis, the CPI recorded an increase of 1.0 per cent as compared to May 2020, he said.

“The increase was attributed by Transport (7.8 per cent), food and non-alcoholic beverages (0.4 per cent), miscellaneous goods and services (0.4 per cent), furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance (0.1 per cent), alcoholic beverages and tobacco (0.1 per cent) and health (0.1 per cent),” said Mohd Uzir.

The index for all states decreased between 1.3 and 2.7 per cent in June 2020 as compared to June 2019, he said.

The highest decrease was recorded by Sabah and Wilayah Persekutuan Labuan (2.7 per cent) followed by Sarawak (2.6 per cent) and Melaka (2.6 per cent).

However, all states registered an increase in food and non-alcoholic beverages indexes.

The highest increase was recorded by Selangor and Wilayah Persekutuan Putrajaya (2.5 per cent), Pahang (2.4 per cent), Perak (2.2 per cent), Johor (2.0 per cent), Pulau Pinang (1.9 per cent) and Negeri Sembilan (1.7 per cent) which surpassed the national index of 1.6 per cent for food and non-alcoholic beverages in June 2020, he added.
