Make plastic bag fee a mandatory condition to apply for business license

SHAH ALAM, July 3 — The Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) had proposed for the 20sen per plastic bag charge programme to be made a mandatory condition for the new application or renewal of business licenses next year.

Its Corporate Department director Mohamad Zin Masoad had suggested that the condition should be included in the license bill, which would allow action to be taken if the terms are violated.

“This year we have spread awareness and promoted the programme to all business premises so that it would be implemented thoroughly in areas under the purview of MPS,” he told SelangorKini when contacted yesterday.

Mohamad Zin said to date, a total of 127 business premises under the local council had registered for the programme.

“We hope this would help the state government in creating a cleaner and healthier environment as well as in formulating a holistic sustainability programme,” he added.

The Selangor government had approved the collection of the plastic bag fee through local authorities beginning January 1, this year.

The funds would be channelled to the state Trust Fund and would be used for environmental programmes.
