Man dies in early morning fire, brother escapes unhurt

SHAH ALAM, July 23 — A man met with a fiery end while his brother escaped unhurt when their double-storey house at Taman Bukit Saga, Section 26, here, caught fire early this morning.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant operation director Hafisham Mohd Noor said the charred body of Ahmad Zulhilman Zakaria, 27, was found in his bedroom at the upper level of the house.

He said the victim’s brother, Ahmad Hamizan, 25, who was in his bedroom downstairs managed to escape through the window and shouted for help in the 4am incident.

“Three brothers lived in the house while their parents are working abroad. Investigations found that the youngest brother, Ahmad Nazmi, 21, was not at home during the fire and was staying over his friend’s house.

“The house is 90 per cent destroyed and the cause of the fire is being investigated,” he told reporters at the scene.

Meanwhile, a neighbour who wished to remain unknown said he heard the sound of broken glasses and Ahmad Zulhilman’s cry for help at about 3am and assumed that the house was broken into before he saw the huge fire and thick smoke.

“Ahmad Hamizan came to me and told me that his brother couldn’t get out of the house. Other neighbours also came to assist them but the fire was too rapid and it was too hot that we couldn’t get near the house.

“We are truly sorry for not being able to help the victim because we have been neighbours for decades and all this happened when their parents are not home,” he said.
