Covid-19 pushes nations to embrace digital platforms, says exco

SHAH ALAM, Aug 25 — The Covid-19 pandemic that had severely impacted the global social and economic sectors since early this year has driven many countries to embrace the digital platforms, says Dato’ Teng Chang Khim.

The Selangor state executive councillor said digitalisation is also proven as an enabler in assisting businesses to absorb and speed up the economic recovery during the pandemic.

“Although digital communication technology has been in the market for quite a while, the Covid-19 pandemic has really pushed all of us to embrace digital platforms as a more viable channel for communication,” said Teng in his opening remarks of the Virtual Selangor Asean Business Conference (SABC) 2020 today.

“We believe that SABC is also an appropriate avenue for us to address the current regional economic issues, as a result of the pandemic, and share viable solutions. It has been more than half a year since the start of Covid-19 pandemic and here in Malaysia, we are still in the movement control order.”

Teng said SABC is an annual conference organised by the state administration to bring together prominent speakers, business leaders, trade-related associations and trade policymakers with diverse background from the Asean region as well as Asean Dialogue partner countries.

The Selangor Investment, Industry & Commerce and Small & Medium Enterprise Committee chairman said due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the state is adapting its approach in delivering the content to the audiences while maintaining its objectives and vision of the conference.

“I believe, moving forward, this will be the trend and way of delivering and sharing knowledge and experience to our target audience.

“Today, our three distinguished speakers share their point of views on how Asean as an economic community, would be able to capitalise on our inherent resilience to rise and rebound from the economic doldrums,” Teng said.

Invest Selangor Bhd had today held the first series of the Virtual SABC, which saw prominent speakers such as China-Asean Investment Cooperation Fund, Hong Kong managing director Than Su Ee, International Data Corporation (IDC) Asean, managing director Sudev Bangah, and Universiti Malaysia Kebangsaan, Centre for Sustainable and Inclusive Development, Economics Prof Dr Jamal Othman.

Themed ‘Asean: A Beacon of Light in a Pandemic-hit World Economy’, the Virtual SABC will host a monthly series of four webinars from August 25, 2020, at 11am -12.15pm, with the main Selangor International Business Summit 2020 slated for October 14, 2020 from 11am – 12.15pm.
