Idle land owned by state GLC can be used for food security programme

DANGKIL, Aug 19 — Almost 1,000 acres of land belonging to a Selangor government-linked company (GLC) that was left idle has the potential to be developed for agriculture and livestock farming.

Selangor Public Amenities, Agricultural Modernisation and Agro-based Industry Committee chairman Izham Hashim said the initial planning for a mixed development on the land had not fallen through as the site was unsuitable.

“For example, about 1,000 acres of land in Pulau Indah owned by a GLC is abandoned. It is more suited for crab farming as opposed to housing development.

“And if there is enough land, it can be used as part of the Selangor Food Security Programme soon,” he said after visiting the Sungai Langat river bund upgrading site in Taman Permata Dengkil here yesterday.

Also present was Selangor Drainage and Irrigation Department director Datuk Gapar Asan.

The Selangor economic recovery plan announced on July 13 had revealed a RM50 million allocation for the Food Security Programme, which outlines five key measures.

The programme is one of the Selangor administration’s efforts to safeguard food security in the state, the latter being one of the three main points of focus to stimulate the state’s economy.
