Selangor MB commits to building state’s food supply chain ecosystem

By Sherilyn Pang

SHAH ALAM, Aug 27 — The Selangor government is committed towards improving Selangor’s economy post-Covid-19.

It aims to empower its local agropreneurs and agriculture industry using digital platforms towards developing an ecosystem that enables agropreneurs to sell and supply across the state.

According to Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, the state is currently working with Selangor Digital e-Supply Chain (Seldec) to consolidate its agricultural and food supply chain by building an ecosystem that sells and supplies goods via a partnership with Hijrah Selangor, an integrated micro credit programme launched by the state government since 2010.

“Selangor is committed to rehabilitating its economy post-coronavirus by empowering its local agropreneurs and agriculture industry by using digital platforms. The state is working with Seldec to consolidate the Selangor agricultural and food supply chain, building an ecosystem that sells and supplies across the state via a partnership with Hijrah Selangor,”  said Amirudin on his official social media pages today.

Through this initiative, rural agro-entrepreneurs such as fishermen, farmers, packet food producers, bakers, health supplements and retail fashion small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) can directly sell their products online.

Seldec, which is spearheaded by the Selangor Industrial Corporation Sdn Bhd (SIC), was launched on June 24 this year and targets to create 7,800 jobs in various sectors by 2025.

It also dedicates logistics to deliver the products directly to the buyer thus minimising the length in supply chains and reducing operating cost along the way.

Aside from that, the initiative under the Food Security thrust of the Selangor economic recovery plan,  has received encouraging responses from the public following the success of the Selangor Agro Market (SAM) throughout the movement control order (MCO).

SAM, a monthly local market event that offers vegetables, fruits and fresh catch at low prices have successfully and effectively addressed concerns towards fresh food supply chain and storage problems during the MCO. As such, Selangor intends to retain it as a model for the future of the state’s food supply chain.

The public can order fresh food items and many other products at seldec.com.my.
