Sungai Klang to be made water supply source for Selangor

SHAH ALAM, Aug 18 — The Selangor government is aiming to make Sungai Klang as one of the water supply sources for the state in the future, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said currently, the state water supply comes from Sungai Selangor and Sungai Langat.

“The target was set after we managed to improve the water quality of Sungai Klang from level four to level three through the Selangor Maritime Gate (SMG) project. The amount of rubbish extracted from the river was also reduced to four tonnes compared to 10 tonnes per month previously.

“The plan has also been brought to the Environment and Water Ministry. Any effort, including the construction of the Sungai Rasau Water Treatment Plant (LRA) will be announced during the tabling of the state 2021 Budget,” he told a press conference held in conjunction with the state-level World Rivers Day celebration here today.

Amirudin said if the plan materialised, Sungai Klang is expected to be able to supply 1,000 million litres of water per day (MLD) for public consumption in the state.

On the state-level World Rivers Day celebration, he said the state government would launch the Friends of River (FoR) initiative at about 20 locations in Selangor.

Amirudin said FoR was established at all rivers in the state with the aim to conserve and preserve the quality of river water through the participation of the local community as well as non-governmental organisations.

Meanwhile, he said authorities in the state had successfully prevented five river pollution incidents in an operation codenamed “Op Sumber Air”.

The oil spill incidents were detected near the Sungai Selangor LRA, Labohan Dagang LRA, Bukit Tampoi LRA, Sungai Labu LRA and Sungai Salak Tinggi LRA last April, May and June.

Amirudin said if immediate action was not taken, the incidents could cause the main LRA to cease its operations for cleaning purposes.
