KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 — The Congress of Union of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) is confident that online registration and learning replacing face-to-face classroom teaching, will facilitate the management of staff and students in institutions of higher learning (IPT).
In a statement yesterday, secretary-general Abdul Rahman Mohd Nordin said it was also to ensure the safety and health of staff and students of IPT from the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The lives of students and staff are equally important. Staff in all IPTs are the driving force behind an institution. If they are not taken care of, all matters and administration will not be smooth and efficient,” said Abdul Rahman who is also the secretary of the Joint Councils of Presidents and Honorary Secretaries of the Malaysian Universities Staff Union (Gakum).
Higher Education Minister Datuk Dr Noraini Ahmad was recently reported to have proposed that the registration and learning process for students be done online and students can return to their respective campuses according to the existing standard operating procedures (SOP) after the Covid-19 pandemic has recovered.
Although the proposal was questioned by former Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, Abdul Rahman, who represented Cuepacs and Gakum, believed that the measure was not only to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic but also to prove the government’s concern for the safety of those involved.
Echoing Cuepacs, the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Alumni Association (PAUiTM) viewed the proposal submitted by Noraini as a move to prevent any untoward incident from happening because it will affect the university administration.
“This move is very necessary as there has been a significant spike in Covid-19 cases lately,” said PAUiTM president, Datuk Mohd Zaini Hassan.
