Sales of wholesale and retail trade continue recovery in July 2020

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 — Malaysia’s wholesale and retail trade sales recorded RM108.7 billion in July 2020 and continued to recover, posting year-on-year growth of -3.5 per cent from -8.4 per cent in June 2020, says the Department of Statistics Malaysia.

In a report released today, chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said this was the highest sales value since the implementation of the movement control order due to Covid-19.

“All sub-sectors continued to recover, led by motor vehicles which rebounded to 1.7 per cent as against July 2019 to record RM13.9 billion. Retail trade was also on the recovery path to register -3.8 per cent from -9.2 per cent in the previous month. Similarly, wholesale trade also improved from -8.7 per cent recorded in June 2020 to -4.5 per cent in July 2020,” he said.

He said the encouraging growth was mainly due to the tax relief announced by the government through Penjana.

He said the online retail sales index, which portrays e-commerce activity, also expanded 34.7 per cent as against July 2019.

In terms of volume index, Mohd Uzir said wholesale and retail trade declined -3.9 per cent as against the same period last year.
