Selangor set up a river conservation monitoring committee

By Norrasyidah Arshad

SUBANG JAYA, Sept 26: The Selangor government has set up a special committee to plan out and monitor the state’s river conservation programme.

Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the Selangor State River Conservation Implementation Committee covers the policies and strategies implemented by the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas).

“The first strategy touches on the physical development of the river such as upgrading the riverbank structure, landscape and information centre, while the second strategy is on improving the cleanliness of the reserves and the quality of the river.

“Subsequently is to increase public awareness and stakeholder involvement such as the Friends of Rivers (FoR), learning modules, awareness programs and database platforms development,” said Amirudin in conjunction with the state-level World Rivers Day celebration here today.

His speech was read by the State Public Amenities, Agricultural Modernisation and Agro-based Industry Committee chairman Izham Hashim.

Amirudin said his team is also studying incentives for informants of pollution incidents or activities that risk inviting water problems.

“This method helps the government to identify irresponsible and concerned parties on the state’s rivers and water resources,” he said.
