PUTRAJAYA, Oct 2 — A total of 287 new Covid-19 cases were recorded in the past 24 hours, the highest daily figure recorded since the pandemic began in Malaysia, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
He said all 287 cases were local transmissions, taking the cumulative total number of cases to 11,771, with 1,540 active cases.
“This is the increasing trend that the Ministry of Health (MOH) feared and which we keep reminding the public about daily because it is in line with the rising trend of Covid-19 cases and deaths seen worldwide.
“The number of Covid-19 cases worldwide has reached about 34.2 million cases while the daily number of cases has also risen to around 309,000 cases compared to about 302,000 previously,” he told a press conference on Covid-19 today.
He said no fatalities were reported today and the death toll remains at 136.
Dr Noor Hisham said 20 of the new cases involved those returning from Sabah, taking the cumulative number of cases involving travels to the state to 139 since Sept 20.
The 20 cases were detected via screening in Selangor (13 cases); Perak and Negeri Sembilan (two each); Terengganu, Kelantan and Labuan (one each).
In detailing the breakdown of the cases today, he said Kedah recorded the highest number of new cases with 129 infections, of which 128 involved the Tembok Cluster.
He said Sabah recorded 113 new cases, among them 52 cases of symptomatic screening; 35 from the Benteng Lahad Datu Cluster; and 15 from the Bangau-Bangau Cluster.
Selangor had 31 new cases, with nine from two new clusters, namely Seri Anggerik Cluster (eight cases) and Seri Setia Cluster (one case). Perak and Terengganu each recorded three new cases while Negeri Sembilan and Kelantan reported two new cases each.
“Johor, Pahang, Kuala Lumpur and Labuan each recorded one new case today,” he said.
There are currently 22 patients being treated in the intensive care unit, with four needing ventilator support. There were also 81 recoveries, taking the cumulative total recoveries to 10,095 cases.
