Covid-19: Thailand plans to welcome short-term business travellers

BANGKOK, Oct 6 — Thailand plans to welcome short-term business travellers back into the kingdom to stimulate its economy which has been badly hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Government spokesperson, Anucha Buraphachaisri said the government saw the need to allow business groups as well as investors to enter Thailand for business purposes.

“They are short-term business travellers. Therefore, there should be special measures to supervise them.

“The relevant agencies will prepare a set of measures (for short-term business travellers) to curb the spread of Covid-19,” he said in a statement.

He added that the secretary-general of the National Security Council (NSC), General Somsak Rungsita would chair a meeting soon to discuss the matter before submitting a proposal at the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) meeting chaired by Prime Minister Prayuth Chan o-cha.

The measures for short-term business travellers include these travellers requiring to have negative Covid-19 result 72 hours before entering Thailand, medical insurance for Covid-19 with a minimum coverage of US$100,000, Covid-19 test at the point of entry, and tracking application throughout their stay in the kingdom.

Since July 1, Anucha said CCSA had approved 11,000 foreigners including businessmen and work permit holders to enter the kingdom.

All of them underwent the 14-day compulsory quarantine at hotels, the alternative state quarantine (ASQ) centres, he said.

Meanwhile, Thailand recorded five new Covid-19 cases and zero fatalities over the last 24 hours, bringing the tally to 3,590 cases with 59 fatalities.

The five new cases include a Portuguese cabin crew member who flew into the kingdom from Malaysia. He was on a chartered flight from Portugal to India and Malaysia before landing in Thailand on September 30.

The other new patients include a Thai woman who arrived from Japan, two Indians and a Bahrain national.
