EMCO at Seberang Prai Prison, staff quarters beginning tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 21 — The government will enforce the enhanced movement control order (EMCO) at the Seberang Prai Prison and its staff quarters effective October 22 (tomorrow) until November 4.

Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the EMCO was implemented on the advice of the Health Ministry (MOH) to control the spread of Covid-19 at the prison and the quarters.

“The EMCO allows the movements in and out of the area to be controlled, and facilitates targeted Covid-19 screenings.

“Inmates who will be released during the EMCO period would be isolated and quarantined at Institut Latihan Kecemerlangan Mara (MEC), Seberang Perai Selatan until their quarantine period is over,” he told a virtual press conference via the Ministry of Defence’s Facebook page today.

Ismail Sabri said the EMCO would involve 2,110 inmates, 1,000 prisons staff living in the quarters, 120 prison staff who do not live in the quarters as well as 32 civil servants.
