SEPANG, Oct 5 — A goose farm undergoing cleaning operation is said to have caused the foul carcass odour in Sungai Semenyih, which resulted in the temporary closure of two water treatment plants in Selangor last night.
State Environment, Green Technology, Science and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Hee Loy Sian said the farm located in Sungai Pajam, Negeri Sembilan, had conducted a large-scale cleaning operation at 9am yesterday.
“The pollution is also suspected to have come from the Nilai Industrial Area 3. In Selangor however, we did not detect any cause of pollution.
“As of 9.30am, the pollution level of Sungai Semenyih was recorded to be at 8 TON (threshold odour number).
“The Selangor government has informed Negeri Sembilan of this matter and requested its authorities to launch an investigation,” he said at the press conference held at Tasik Idaman here today.
Hee said the Bukit Tampoi and Sungai Semenyih water treatment plants will only resume operations after the TON reading drops to zero.
“We are unsure when the treatment plants will reopen but we have pumped water from a few areas to neutralise the polluted water in Sungai Semenyih,” he added.
The closure of the two treatment plants had caused unscheduled water cuts in 274 areas involving 309,687 account holders in the districts of Petaling, Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat and Sepang.
