SHAH ALAM, Oct 19 —Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari says the river pollution of Sungai Selangor is expected to resolve in the evening today.

He said works to flush and dilute the contaminants from Sungai Selangor is making good progress and that water supply restoration to the affected users in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur will be carried out in stages.

“The process to clear the contaminants is ongoing. Based on the trend of the current reading, the pollution should be cleared by this evening.

“The current pollution level reading is at 1 TON (Threshold Odour Number). The water supply will resume when the reading goes down to zero,” said Amirudin on a Facebook today after visiting the Sungai Selangor Phase 2 water intake.

“Water supply will be restored in stages after that.”

Amirudin said a police report has been lodged on the incident and investigation is ongoing.

He added that Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) has mobilised 81 water tankers, deployed 34 static water tanks and set up 17 local service centres to supply waters to affected users.

Meanwhile, in a statement at noon today, Air Selangor said the latest pollution level reading taken at the water intake of the Rantau Panjang Water Treatment Plant shows a reading of 0 TON (Threshold Odour Number), while the reading at the Sungai Selangor Phase 1, 2, 3 Water Treatment Plants still registers 1 TON.

Earlier today, Air Selangor said a total of 1,196,457 users in 1,292 areas in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur were hit by unscheduled water supply disruption following the pollution of Sungai Selangor.

The statement said the areas affected include Kuala Lumpur, Petaling, Klang/Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Kuala Langat.

The pollution detected at 2am today had forced the Sungai Selangor Phase 1, 2, 3 and Rantau Panjang Water Treatment Plants to cease operations.
