MBSJ: Enough revenue to withstand pandemic until next year

SHAH ALAM, Oct 21 – The Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) has enough revenue to withstand the impacts of Covid-19 as the financial standing is strong and it is also prepared for next year, says its newly elected mayor Noraini Roslan today.

“Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Subang Jaya’s revenue has been affected but we are still financially sound throughout the year and we are prepared for next year,” said Noraini during her first virtual press conference since Subang Jaya was declared a city yesterday.

According to her, Subang Jaya’s revenue for this year had been reduced significantly and the decrease of income was attributed to reduced revenues from rental payments, development fees and parking fees, among others.

“Our revenue for 2018 was RM272 million, 2019 (RM292million) and in the year 2020, due to the Covid-19 and various other economic factors, the revenue this year is expected to be around RM256 million,” she revealed, adding that the council has targeted to achieve RM300million in revenue every year.

“That is a big decrease so whatever we have planned for the development has to be subsidised by something else, such as collaborating with various parties to ensure the programmes at community and grassroots levels can be successful.”

Noraini added that the council’s revenue may not recover as soon as next year and that the council has adopted a lean management approach to its public service management as well as ensuring that priorities are given to important projects.

“Our revenue may not recover by next year. So, two things we need to do at the city council’s level is to increase spending efficiency by stretching the dollar and giving priorities to matters that the residents are most concerned about compared to other spending that we can postpone to a later time frame,” she said.

“We have aligned Subang Jaya’s missions to be in line with the Smart State agenda, the policies at Federal level, as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and we, want to create a sustainable city with high living standards.

“So even with the current financial constraints, Subang Jaya residents do not have to worry, because the money we have saved up so far is enough for us to sustain and keep the basic necessities going,” she added.
