Recycled items used to replace roofs of homes in Bandar Utama

SHAH ALAM, Oct 26 — The Bandar Utama Community Centre has allocated RM5,000 for the roofing replacement project for homes in Kampung Sungai Kayu Ara and Kampung Cempaka.

State representative Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the project, in cooperation with Tetra Pak Malaysia, had used roofing materials produced from recyclable items to fix the roofs that were already worn-out.

She said her office had supported the full cost of the instalments of the house roofs for two poor families last year.

“The purpose of this collaboration is to ensure that these families in need can be helped in guaranteeing their basic right, that is, to have a habitable home with at least a roof that can protect them from the elements.

“I hope that this collaboration will boost the public’s confidence that recycled materials are not necessarily flimsy and unfit for use. Conversely, recycled materials have plenty of uses.

“I also hope that a project like this will encourage the public to use recycled materials in a manner that suits their own creativity,” she said in a statement yesterday.

Jamaliah said the roofing materials are made from recycled beverage cartons that are made up of 75 per cent paper fibre, 20 per cent polyethylene (plastic) and 5 per cent aluminium foil.

She said the plastic and aluminium combination from the beverage carton, or referred to as Poly-Al, is processed and converted into roof tiles and then donated to the community centre.

“This month, we will be helping two more families to ensure that these families do not experience a leaking roof during the rain. May this project be beneficial to these families, and further encourage the general public to use recycled materials in pursuit of a more sustainable future,” she added.
