Swift action by Luas stops another river pollution in Selangor

SHAH ALAM, Oct 28 — Swift action by the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) in resolving a black oil spill incident has prevented the closure of the water treatment plant.

The agency in a statement said that discarded engine oil waste was detected at the waterway of Jalan KB 1/9, Kampung Baru Balakong at 6pm yesterday.

“This flow would enter Sungai Balak and then Sungai Langat. Oil barrier and oil boom were placed to restrict the flow of the oil spill into Sungai Balak.

“Samples were also taken to be analysed and control measures were implemented at the scene,” the statement read.

According to Luas, the dumping site was in a stagnant water area while investigations found that the act was done by a third party.

“Luas with the cooperation of the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) and the Kajang Department of Environment (DOE) will inform on the latest development from time to time,” it added.

On October 23, two river pollutions in Sungai Kundang, Rawang, and Putrajaya Lake, were detected and resolved, preventing another unscheduled water cut incident from taking place.
