SHAH ALAM, Oct 4 — The youth representatives of Sentosa, Muhammad Mahdiyen Nafiz Mohd Azizi, and Batu Tiga, Maizatul Akasha Meor Mohamed Hafiz, were named the best debaters of the Selangor Virtual 2020 Youth State Assemblyman Programme, held at the Annex of the Selangor State Secretariat building, here yesterday.

Both participants had bagged the RM500 cash prize.

Muhammad Mahdiyen Nafiz, 15, had wrapped up the motion on the Water Services Cluster.

The youngest participant in the programme said he had not expected to have won but was grateful for the experience as he had learned many new things, especially on the state legislative assembly.

“My intention was to voice out the opinion I gathered from my neighbours and friends on what we should bring forward as an attentive politician,” said the Form Three student from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Jalan Kebun, Section 32, Shah Alam.

Aspiring to become a politician, Muhammad Mahdiyen Nafiz said he had kept himself up-to-date with current events and hopes to be able to do better in carrying the voice of the people in the future.

During his debate, among the matters raised include proposing on building water tank storages in housing areas as well as the use of emergency alarms to detect water source pollution, which could lead to the closure of water treatment plants.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old Maizatul Akasha, who had won in the Economic Cluster,
said she was able to learn more of the state government’s programmes, especially those focusing on the low-income groups.

The science student from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) said the youth assembly programme was a stepping stone for her to delve in the field of politics, though uncertain whether she would join politics in the future.

“I got to know of many state government policies which are not promoted enough so we don’t know much about it.

“I also get to experience sitting in the state legislative assembly. Even though it was done virtually, it was nevertheless an experience,” she said.

Selangor had yesterday held the first-ever virtual state legislative assembly sitting that includes youths from the age of 15 to 35.

The programme had involved 56 participants from each state constituency.
