Change local enforcement officers to avoid power abuse, says Selangor rep

SHAH ALAM, Nov 10 — Local authorities are advised to reshuffle its enforcement officers to other departments within the council during a certain time period to curb abuse of power.

Port Klang state representative Azmizam Zaman Huri said that many of the officers are serving in the same department for a long period of time between 20 to 30 years.

“We are not trying to point fingers but we must learn from the previous cases of misconduct.

“The state government has to look into measures that would allow the local enforcement officers to be moved to a different department, perhaps once every three to four years,” he said during the debate session of the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) (Amendment) 2020 at the State Legislative Assembly sitting here yesterday.

Azmizam added that local enforcement officers play a crucial role in preventing pollution of the rivers in the state.

The Selangor Legislative Assembly had yesterday unanimously passed the amendments made to the Luas Enactment, which include raising the minimum fine to RM200,000 and a maximum penalty of RM1 million as well as mandatory jail time.
