Influencers can help raise awareness about domestic violence

By Norrasyidah Arshad

SHAH ALAM, Nov 21 — The Domestic Violence Issues Coordination Taskforce has proposed to feature social media influencers in raising domestic violence awareness to the public.

State Public Health, Unity, Women and Family Development Committee chairman Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud said the move is in line with the objectives of setting up the task force which is to address the increase in domestic violence cases.

“We have conducted several seminars and had some directions but getting public support has proven to be quite challenging. So we are looking into collaborating with several TikTok or Youtube celebrities.

“We will keep working on increasing public awareness,” she said after a virtual roundtable conference was held to highlight domestic violence cases in the state.

Dr Siti Mariah said the task force may not be able to implement all the proposed action plans, however, the capacity for essential roles will be carried out.

“We will ensure the continuity of the task force’s effectiveness from year to year,” she added.

The Domestic Violence Issues Coordination Task Force serves as a think tank to establish an action plan specifically to address the issue through strategic partnerships.

The task force, which was set up following an 80 per cent rise in domestic violence cases in Selangor from January to October this year, will be represented by various agencies such as the Social Welfare Department (JKM) and the Selangor State Health Department.
