SHAH ALAM, Nov 29 — The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) has approved 20 ‘akad nikah’ (marriage solemnisation) ceremonies a day at all its Islamic Religious District Offices (Paid) since mid-November.

Jais director Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad said the ceremony requires the permission from the chief registrar of marriages and divorces, and ruju’ in Selangor.

“The ‘akad nikah’ ceremony is held in two sessions, 10 (couples) in the morning and another 10 in the evening in accordance with very strict standard operating procedure (SOP).

“The bride and groom cannot choose their own date as it is set by the religious district offices,” he said when contacted by SelangorKini today.

Previously on November 2, the department allowed only five ‘akad nikah’ ceremonies a day, from Monday to Friday between 9am to 4pm, with only three people allowed to attend, which are the groom, bride and the bride’s ‘wali’ or guardian.

The permission is only for couples in Selangor with the brides or grooms from outside of Selangor who are given the permission to cross borders.
