Malaysia’s first e-sports docuseries set to inspire passionate gamers

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 17 — E-sports fans in Malaysia will soon be able to enjoy a five-part docuseries chronicling the rise of e-sports and the gaming industry in Malaysia over the last 14 years.

Titled Jalur 14, the series will feature 14 Malaysian e-sports icons including internationally-acclaimed players such as Chai ‘Mushi’ Yee Fung, Ng ‘YamateH’ Wei Poong, and Malaysia’s first e-sports gold medallist Dr Yew Weng Kean, along with industry young blood such as Mohd Fariz ‘Soloz’ Zakaria, Ahmad Fuad ‘Fredo’ Razali and Andriyana ‘Chuchu Gaming’ Mohamed Ghazali.

The series which premieres on selected channels on November 26, will tell the “zero-to-hero” tales of the players as they share their struggles, challenges and experiences on their path to success in putting the Jalur Gemilang on the world map.

At its online launch yesterday, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said the ministry continued to believe in the potential of e-sports and the gaming industry.

“With RM15 million allocated for e-sports in the recent budget announcement, we want our initiatives to create opportunities that will upskill and develop our youth who are passionate about this industry. We’re very proud of the talents highlighted in Jalur 14,” he added.

He hoped the docuseries would go on to inspire passionate gamers to become key movers in Malaysia’s e-sports industry.

Reezal Merican also said that there was a need for structures and mechanisms to protect the welfare and rights of e-sports players.

“The players are the backbone of the entire industry, and a sustainable ecosystem doesn’t exploit and leave their players unprotected,” he added.

Watch the first episode of Jalur 14 at 9pm on November 26, on eGG Network Astro CH800, available to all Astro subscribers.
