MB: 13 river pollution immediately resolved this year, prevent water cuts

SHAH ALAM, Nov 30 — The Selangor government has successfully managed to immediately resolve 13 raw water pollution incidents this year and had prevented the closure of water treatment plants (WTP), says its Menteri Besar.

Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said a total of 21 river pollution cases were detected in the year 2020, with the latest incident reported on November 25 near Bandar Bukit Mahkota, Cheras.

“However, some of the (pollution) incidents could not be avoided.

“The main constraint is that there is no technology able to detect odour pollution and (we) need to rely solely on the human nose,” said Amirudin on a Facebook post today.

In addressing the issue, he said the state government has allocated RM200 million in the 2021 Selangor Budget.

“Through a short and long term strategy, the state government aim to continue preserving the water supply sources,” he said.

On October 30, Amirudin detailed plans for the RM200 million allocation, which will commence this year and is expected to be completed within 18 months.

The projects include:

– the pilot project for the biological treatment of Sungai Gong’s water quality conservation

– 24-hour surveillance and monitoring of sensitive water source areas via ‘Skuad Pantas’ or Rapid Squad

– addition of water quality telemetry systems for early alert of high-risk locations at water intake areas

– raw water pump project from the Hybrid Off River Augmentation Storage (Horas) 600 to Sungai Selangor and Sungai Semenyih.
