Sabotage in river pollution a day after Luas Bill passed, police report lodged — MB

SHAH ALAM, Nov 10 — The Selangor government has lodged a police report over the odour pollution detected in Sungai Selangor today.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said enough evidence was found that showed it was an act of sabotage.

“Preliminary investigation traced the pollutants to the Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) plant and industrial area in Taman Velox, Ampang.

“It is believed there is an element of intrusion and sabotage. This incident took place a day after the amendments to the Luas (Selangor Water Management Authority) enactment was approved,” said Amirudin in his Twitter account this evening.

Meanwhile, Luas said it had launched a joint investigation with Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) and relevant authorities on the contamination incident.

“We are working hard to investigate (the matter) and implement immediate mitigation action to overcome this incident,” it said in a statement.

Luas said 37 bags of activated carbon have been placed to remove the odour pollution.

It said the source of the contamination was suspected to have come from the effluent discharge from the IWK sewage plant in Taman Velox, Rawang, which was due to the illegal dumping of waste into a nearby manhole.

“The IWK sewage treatment plant is located 12 kilometres away from the Rantau Panjang Water Treatment Plant,” the statement read.

Following the pollution incident, the Rantau Panjang and the Sungai Selangor Phase 1, 2, and 3, Water Treatment Plants (WTP) were forced to shut down at noon today.

The closure had caused over 1.1 million account users in 1,279 areas in Kuala Lumpur, Petaling, Klang, Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Kuala Langat to face unscheduled water cuts.
