SHAH ALAM, Nov 22 — Selangor government is focused on developing the halal industry which has huge economic potential and receives high demand from consumers.
State executive councillor on halal industry Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni said the sector is expected to record RM50 billion revenue this year based on a report by the Malaysian Halal Development Corporation.
He said the industry is also expected to contribute about 7.4 per cent to the 2020 Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
“Apart from the Selangor Halal Hub, we intend to streamline agencies such as the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais), Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) and Halal International Selangor into entities that operate along the same path.
“This move is to facilitate industry players and tap foreign investment,” he said when officiating the Bicara Halal (Halal Talk) program which was broadcasted virtually yesterday.
Mohd Zawawi said issues on halal does not only cover food but also includes medicines, cosmetics and banking system that involves interests (riba).
The Selangor Halal Council, comprising of Invest Selangor Bhd together with Mais and Jais is responsible in formulating and conducting a study on the state’s Halal Industry Action Plan from 2018 to 2028.
The effort includes conducting specific research and guidelines to determine the development focus in making Selangor the primary choice of global halal trade.
