Selangor WiFi uses fibre technology, says exco

SHAH ALAM, Nov 5 — The Selangor government has upgraded its Smart Selangor WiFi service using fibre technology since July.

State executive councillor for infrastructure and public amenities Izham Hashim said the realignment will enable the people to use the Internet at a speed of as fast as 100 megabits per second (Mbps).

“Previously, we were using Streamyx but after the realignment, we have switched to using fibre technology. This year, we are aiming to provide 1,100 hotspots which will be increased to 1,500 next year.

“Each of the WiFi hotspot can be accessed by 30 users at one given time. More will be made available, allowing more people to have free internet access,” said Izham Hashim during his winding-up speech at the Selangor Legislative Assembly sitting yesterday.

He added that as of now, there are five concentrated clusters of locations to be given the Smart Selangor WiFi coverage.

The clusters include low-cost and medium-cost housing (areas); education, health and religion; communities; transportation, sports and recreation; and state government agencies.
