Sungai Selangor pollution: Police arrest four individuals

By Norrasyidah Arshah

SHAH ALAM, Nov 11 — Four individuals including a woman were arrested by the police at three separate locations today to assist in the investigation into the Sungai Selangor odour pollution incident.

Selangor Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief Datuk Fadzil Ahmat said the suspects aged between 33 and 43 years old were arrested in Gombak, Damansara and Kelana Jaya, at around midnight to early morning.

“Investigation revealed the woman is a registered business owner with the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM). She had rented a premise suspected of being used to dump the chemical waste into the sewerage.

“The other two suspects including a Bangladeshi national were found to have used the premise as a chemical storage facility,” said Fadzil in a statement today.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 430 of the Penal Code for committing mischief which can cause a diminution of water supply for agricultural purposes, for the consumption of human beings or animals, or for carrying out any manufacturing activities.

Fadzil said all the suspects will be remanded today at the Selayang Court to assist in further investigation.

Yesterday, operations at the Sungai Selangor Phase 1, 2, 3, and the Rantau Panjang Water Treatment Plants (WTP) were stopped due to odour pollution detected in Sungai Selangor.

This led to an unscheduled water disruption affecting over one million account users in 1,279 in seven districts, namely Kuala Lumpur, Petaling, Klang, Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Kuala Langat.
