Brandan Gan hopes third time’s the charm at ABK20

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 29 — Selangor FC midfielder Brendan Gan hopes he is third time lucky to win the Best Midfielder Award at the 2020 National Football Awards (ABK20).

While expressing delight over being nominated for the award the third time, the 32-year-old said his teammates had helped him a lot throughout the campaign.

“I still believe and hold to the principle that hard work will bring great rewards…Having been nominated before and also now makes me want to do better every year,” he said in a statement from the Malaysia Football League (MFL).

He will be up against nine other players, Safawi Rashid, Afiq Fazail, Leandro Velazquez, Gonzalo Cabrera (all from Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT)), Faisal Abd Halim, Nor Azam Abdul Azih (Pahang), Leandro dos Santos (Perak), Lee Tuck (Terengganu FC) and Syahmi Safari (Selangor).

Meanwhile, JDT defender Aidil Zafuan Ab. Radzak views Shahrul Saad as the most qualified candidate to win the Best Defender Award this year based on his achievements as Perak team captain and the team’s fourth-place finish in the 2020 Super League.

“I am not placing any high hopes, and I have also won (the award) several times previously, so let’s wait and see who really deserves to win.

“Most importantly, I wish to thank all the supporters who have voted, and to those who voted for me, I will never forget the support you’ve given,” he said.

Other players in the running for the Best Defender Award this year are Azmi Muslim (Penang), La’Vere Corbin-Ong, Matthew Davies (JDT), Rafiuddin Roddin (Perak), Shahrul Nizam Ros Hasni (Kelantan), Shakir Hamzah (Kedah), Victor Nirennold (UiTM FC) and Wan Amirul Afiq Wan Ab Rahman (Melaka).

Aidil is the current record-holder, having previously won the Best Defender Award four times.
