SHAH ALAM, Dec 3 — The Malaysia Top E-Commerce Merchant Awards 2020 (Top ECM), organised by the Selangor Information Technology and E-Commerce Council (Sitec), is a testament of the state’s attractiveness as an e-commerce hub for merchants in the country.

Selangor executive councillor for commerce Dato’ Teng Chang Kim said the awards event had attracted some of the top online business traders in Malaysia.

He said through the 14-day Online Sales Contest conducted between November 3 until 16, the competition saw a total RM36.6 million in sales generated, which is a 300 per cent increase compared to the event last year with only RM13 million in total sales.

“Selangor’s status as the country’s e-commerce hub has also been proven with 54.7 per cent of the (Top ECM) shortlisted participants coming from the Klang Valley.

“From the 14-day Online Sales Contest conducted, the 123 shortlisted merchants generated RM36.6 million in sales, from a total of over 264,284 orders,” said Teng in his opening speech of the virtual Top ECM event today.

He said the high-volume of sales clearly shows that digital trade is an ever-growing facet of the national economy, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In this year’s 5th Edition of Top ECM, which was held virtually, Teng said it had attracted 162 submissions for the awards, with 123 submissions shortlisted.

Since Top ECM first award was introduced in 2016, he said the contest had typically received between 100 to 125 entries.

“This year’s number of submissions – which was opened between September 15 to October 18, had surpassed the previous record, with an increase of 20 per cent compared to last year.

“The shortlisted e-merchants had demonstrated that they had met the minimum threshold of RM25,000 in sales or 100 orders per month,” he said.

The Top ECM features three categories, namely the Top E-Commerce Merchant Awards, the Selangor E-Commerce Merchant Awards, and the inaugural Rising Star Awards.

Winners take home from a prize pool of RM40,500 in cash and other prizes.
