Former EC chairman now heads Mais, replaces Mohammed Khusrin

SHAH ALAM, Dec 30 — The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, consented the appointment of Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof as the new Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) chairman.

The appointment of the former Election Commission (EC) chairman will take effect on January 1, 2021, to replace Datuk Mohammed Khusrin Munawi.

Mais secretary Dr Ahmad Shahir Makhtar said Sultan Sharafuddin also appointed 20 council members including the State Secretary, Datuk Mohd Amin Ahmad Ahya; Legal Advisor Datuk Salim Soib@Hamid and State Financial Officer, Datuk Nor Azmie Diron for the period of 2021-2023. 

He said appointments were also made for the Selangor mufti Datuk Mohd Tamyes Abdul Wahid; the Selangor Islamic Religious Department director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad; Selangor deputy mufti Datuk Dr Anhar Opir and former deputy police chief Tan Sri Mazlan Mansor.

“Three Mais members’ services have been extended namely Tan Sri Hashim Meon, Tengku Datuk Ardy Esfandiari Alhaj Tengku Abdul Hamid Alhaj and Datuk Mohd Effendi Abdullah. 

“The Selangor police chief was also appointed but at this point the said position is yet to be filled whereas the rest are from among prior members,” said Dr Ahmad Shahir.

Sultan Sharafuddin had, earlier, completed the conferment of appointments at the Istana Bukit Kayangan here today.

Dr Ahmad said, at the same ceremony, the Selangor Ruler also presented conferments of appointments to 11 Selangor Zakat Board Amanah (ALPA LZS) trustees for the 2021-2023 session which was led by its chairman, Tan Sri Syed Anwar Jamalullail.

Meanwhile, he said the former Auditor-General, Tan Sri Amrin Buang, was appointed as the deputy chairman of ALPA LZS.

“The appointments were in accordance with Mais’ approval and consent by the Sultan of Selangor. His Royal Highness had consented to the appointment of Mohamed Khalid Share@Shaii as the Selangor Syariah High Court Judge effective December 16 and hopefully, it will strengthen the administration of Islamic affairs, thus, spurring the progress of the ummah,” he said.
