‘Jelajah Selangor Bekerja’: State govt provides equal job opportunities to all

By Zareef Muzammil

SHAH ALAM, Dec 1 — The state government does not discriminate against any individual, including ex-convicts, who are job seeking via the ‘Jelajah Selangor Bekerja’ (Selangor Jobs Exploration 2020) programme.

State executive councillor for youth development Mohd Khairuddin Othman said equal opportunities are offered to all individuals to obtain suitable employment.

“We open the room to all and there are no issues on the status of whether a person is a former prisoner because only they themselves know (their background).

“To encourage (former) prisoner to apply and attend an interview is a commendable effort. At least they (former prisoner) have the initiative to become (financially) independent, so it is the state government’s responsibility to provide a platform for it,” he said at the ‘Bual Bicara’ talk show titled ‘Peluang Kerja, Gilap Potensi Anak Muda’ (Job Opportunity, Polishing Youth Potential), broadcasted live via Media Selangor’s Facebook yesterday night.

The state-organised ‘Jelajah Selangor Bekerja’ tour series started in Kuala Selangor on November 15 followed by Gombak (November 21), Sungai Buloh (November 22), Hulu Langat (November 29) and will next be held in Shah Alam (December 5 and 6).

Among the employment opportunities offered include professor, lecturer, Quran tutors, accountant, sales manager, research officer, technician, meter reader, call centre operator, terminal tractor driver, supervisor and storekeeper.

Mohd Khairuddin added that they are considering a proposal to hold a similar programme but only to participants with Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) qualification.

“We will take into account the hardship faced by SPM-level participants in finding a (perfect) job match. Maybe we will organise a career fair based on the qualification or hold online interview session.

“However, during the tour in Hulu Langat there are sectors (employers) who was looking for participants with Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) and SPM qualification,” he added.
