Malaysia hits record high 2,234 Covid-19 cases, 63.9 pct in Selangor alone

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 10 — Malaysia recorded 2,234 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24-hours, the highest since the pandemic hit the country in January.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the latest figures bring the total number of infections in the country to 74,499 cases, with 11,867 of them active ones.

Dr Noor Hisham said Selangor continues to record the highest number of daily new cases with 1,428 reported overnight, adding that 1,321 cases were detected from close contact tracing and existing clusters.

He expects the numbers in Selangor to remain high after the Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) expanded its Covid-19 workers screening test programme and also proactive action taken by employers in the Klang Valley.

“Most of the state’s cases involve workplace clusters, especially the Seruling Cluster with 842 cases and the Hentian Cluster (315 cases),” he said in a statement today.

Dr Noor Hisham said the patients have been isolated and placed at the MAEPS 2.0 Covid-19 Quarantine and Low-Risk Treatment Centre in Serdang and also at the Sungai Buloh Hospital.

Meanwhile, two other states that reported high numbers were Sabah with 274 cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur with 136.

“Perak reported 115 cases, Johor (100 cases), Negeri Sembilan (67 cases), Pahang (45 cases), Penang (42 cases), Kedah (14 cases), Melaka (five cases), Kelantan and Terengganu (three cases each) while Sarawak and Putrajaya had one case each,” he said.

Besides this, he said a total of 1,112 recoveries were reported overnight, bringing the tally to 66,236 recovered cases so far.

However, there were also three new fatalities reported, involving two Malaysians in Sabah and one more in Labuan, bringing the country’s death toll to 396 cases.

To date, he said, there are 124 Covid-19 cases being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with 60 of them intubated.
