SHAH ALAM, Dec 18 — Selangor recorded the highest number of domestic tourists arrival in Malaysia last year with 33.6 million visitors, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

Amirudin said according to the 2019 Domestic Tourism Report, the state overtook Kuala Lumpur which recorded 22.6 million visitors, as well as Sabah (22 million), Perak (21.1 million) and Sarawak (19.8 million).

“This statistic shows that Selangor has many unique and attractive places to visit, so the state administration is confident of revitalising the tourism sector which was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The tourism sector is one of the main economic generators for Selangor which brings economic benefits to the locals,” he said at the launching ceremony of the ‘Pusing Selangor Dulu’ (Explore Selangor first!) domestic tourism campaign at the Selangor Economic Action Council (MTES) meeting room yesterday.

The campaign by Tourism Selangor was launched to encourage people to visit the state. The Selangor government also introduced the Tourism Voucher Subsidy programme valued at RM200 each (voucher) which can be claimed from January 8 to 31 next year.

The 7,000 vouchers can be claimed for use at hotel premises, licensed homestays and theme parks in Selangor via the Touch ‘n Go e-Wallet and Lazada platforms.

A total of 3,000 tourism vouchers will also be given to state frontliners by early next year.
