Teacher claims trial to six counts of bribing cops

SHAH ALAM, Jan 6  — A 40-year-old teacher pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to six counts of offering RM9,000 in bribes to policemen between March 2019 and June last year.

Norimi Hashim claimed trial after all the charges were read out to her before judge Rozilah Salleh.

According to the first charge, the woman had allegedly offered RM1,500 to Sergeant Mohd Shukor Md Yusop from the Shah Alam police district headquarters (IPD) patrol unit, as inducement not to take action against her foreign workers who did not have valid travel documents.

The offence was committed through her company, Umi Aqief Enterprise’s CIMB bank account at CIMB Bank Hicom Industrial Park branch, Section 26, here, on March 7, 2019.

On the second and third counts, she allegedly gave RM3,000 to a Selangor traffic police staff officer, Assistant Superintendent Mohd Suwardi Mat Desa for the same purpose. 

The offence was committed via her same CIMB Bank account and the bank account of another company, Umi Group Resources CIMB at the same location on July 27 and Oct 16, 2019, respectively.

 On the fourth to sixth charges, Norimi had allegedly offered RM1,000, RM2,000 and RM1,500 in bribes to Sergeant Mariani Abdullah from the IPD Shah Alam Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Division for the same offence.

It was committed through Umi Group Resources’ CIMB bank account at the same location on September 19 and October 16, 2019, and June 15, last year.

All the offences under Section 17 (b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 are punishable under Section 24 (1) of the same Act. 

The single mother also pleaded not guilty to six alternative charges under Section 6(1)(c ) of the Immigration Act 959/63 and punishable under Section 214 of the Penal Code, for offering RM9,000 in bribes to policemen as inducement not to take action against foreign workers over immigration offences between March 2019 and June last year.

Judge Rozilah set bail at RM20,000 for all charges with one surety, and ordered Norimi to report to the nearest MACC office every month and to surrender her passport to the court until the case is disposed of.

The court fixed October 23 for case mention.

MACC deputy public prosecutor, Fadhil Ab Wahab prosecuted the case while the accused was represented by lawyer, Mohd Yusri Mohd Yusof.
