IPOH, Jan 27 — Each year, Hindu devotees in the country observe Thaipusam, which is dedicated to the Hindu deity Lord Murugan, with prayers and fulfilling of vows at temples in the major cities.
However, this year’s festival, which falls tomorrow, will not be celebrated the same way as previous years due to the implementation of the movement control order (MCO) which disallows gatherings and the procession of chariots.
For K Shanmuga Nathan, 44, from Jalan Changkat Jong, Teluk Intan, he accepted the government’s decision and said his family would observe Thaipusam prayers at home.
“Thank you to the government for deciding not to allow a massive celebration at temples because new clusters might emerge if we are allowed to do so,” he told Bernama.
He said what was more important now was to celebrate this festival just with family members at home.
“I will also pray that Covid-19 will be defeated and our lives will return to normal soon,” he said.
Meanwhile, M Devithran, 28, from Kampung Baru Lahat said he welcomed the decision to allow the prayers on Thaipusam Day to be performed by five committee members or staff of a temple, with strict adherence to the stipulated MCO standard operating procedures (SOP).
“Although there will be no procession of kavadi bearers, milk pot bearers, as well as devotees smashing coconuts and shaving their heads, I will pray at the Sri Muniswarer Temple because I am a staff at this temple.
“It is quite sad not to be able to meet our friends and relatives. But it does not matter, maybe next year we can celebrate Thaipusam as festive as usual,” he said.
