SHAH ALAM, Feb 17 — The implementation of several strategic measures introduced under the Raw Water Security Scheme (SJAM) has prevented river pollution incidents which could risk water treatment plants (WTPs) to cease its operations.

Among the immediate measures taken include the management and 24-hours surveillance at the rivers as well as the use of the nanotechnology element called aquaritin.

State executive councillor for infrastructure Izham Hashim said the actions taken had proven to be effective as nine water pollution cases detected since January up to Sunday were successfully resolved.

“Four measures were taken through SJAM, which include early treatment at water treatment ponds, monitoring and surveillance, construction of infrastructure at Sungai Selangor and the enforcement of the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) (Amendment) Enactment 2020.

“Now we are in the process of implementing all the other measures. Once it is fully executed, we are confident that it would be able to solve the water supply disruption issue,” he told SelangorKini yesterday.

On Sunday, state executive councillor for environment Hee Loy Sian said Luas had successfully dealt with nine pollution incidents that were at risk of causing water supply disruption since January.

The first river pollution case this year was detected on January 15 that involved chemical waste disposal into the sewerage in Sungai Cinchang.

The latest incident was reported on Sunday, involving metal smelting activity near Sungai Semenyih.

Aside from the gazettement of the Luas Enactment, the Selangor government had introduced the SJAM last December with a RM200 million budget for water solutions channelled towards several measures to overcome water supply disruption as well as to ensure the people are provided with continuous water supply.
