State reps urged to organise Covid-19 screening initiative

By Khairul Azran Hussin

SHAH ALAM, Feb 8 — All Selangor state representatives are urged to organise sponsored Covid-19 screening operations in their respective constituencies to curb the spread of the infection within the community.

Selangor Backbenchers Club chairman Elizabeth Wong said the initiative would encourage the people living in high-risk areas and those who cannot afford to undergo the tests.

“This matter was discussed during a meeting between state assemblymen and state executive councillor for health Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud last week.

“We know the cost of conducting the Covid-19 test is quite high, so an offer as low as RM50 is hoped to encourage people to do the screening,” said Wong, who is also Bukit Lanjan assemblyman, to SelangorKini today.

She also urged the Federal government to share the latest data from time to time, to facilitate the representatives’ work and to ensure the effectiveness of the screening programme.

On Saturday, three Pakatan Harapan (PH) parliament and state representatives — including Wong, Sungai Buloh MP Sivarasa Rasiah and Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah — had offered Covid-19 screening priced at RM50.

Other state representatives who have also held similar initiatives include Kota Anggerik assemblyman Mohd Najwan Halimi, Kampung Tungku assemblyman Lim Yi Wei, Subang Jaya assemblyman Michelle Ng, Bukit Gasing assemblyman Rajiv Rishyakaran and Rawang assemblyman Chua Wei Kiat.
