Woman fined RM5,500 for careless driving, causing injury to motorcyclist in Rawang

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 10 — A woman was fined RM5,500 by the Selayang Magistrate’s Court today after pleading guilty to driving carelessly by making a U-turn at the Taman Bersatu traffic light intersection in Rawang and causing serious injuries to a motorcyclist on February 7.

Magistrate Nur Hafizah Rajuni meted out the sentence to Nor Haity Muhamad Aziz, 36, an online trader, and ordered her to serve five months’ jail if she failed to pay the fine.

She was charged with driving her Proton Persona car without reasonable consideration and carelessness which resulted in an accident at the traffic light junction at 4.30pm on February 7.

The charge under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 carries a maximum fine of RM10,000 and a year’s imprisonment.

According to the facts of the case, a motorcyclist was riding from Rawang town towards his house in Taman Tun Teja when suddenly a car coming from the opposite side made a U-turn at the traffic light junction.

The 23-year-old victim could not stop in time and crashed into the left side of the car. The victim fell and suffered a broken right leg and left arm and some injuries to her body due to the incident.

The incident was captured on camera and a 21-second video of it went viral on social media.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Intan Syakieraah Zakaria prosecuted the case while the accused was unrepresented.
