MB: Population growth affects water consumption rate

By Khairul Azran Hussin

SHAH ALAM, March 17 — The migration of people from other states to Selangor has affected the water consumption rate in the state, says Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

The Menteri Besat said the increase in population, which includes foreigners, is driven by the basic facilities provided as well as rapid development and industrial growth.

“The state has seen people migrating here since the 1970s until now, either to work or study at higher learning institutions.

“The multifold increase in development challenges the state government in ensuring the water supply is always in perfect condition,” said Amirudin during the agreement signing ceremony between Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) and Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) at the Intercontinental Hotel Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

The two companies will develop a reclaimed water plant for industrial use in Setia Alam capable of producing eight million litres per day (MLD), Section 23 Shah Alam (40 MLD) and Pantai Dalam, Kuala Lumpur (100 MLD).

The joint venture will help the state and the Federal government to segregate water supply for the domestic and industrial sectors in the long term.

Commenting further, Amirudin said the state administration would also need to ensure that its waste management runs smoothly and more economic opportunities are created in line with the migration of people to the state.
