Selangor to build e-sports development centre, train professional players

By Khairul Azran Hussin

SHAH ALAM, March 24 — Selangor will soon have an e-sports development centre equipped with a training academy, accommodation, studio and teaching staff that will be located in Section 13, here.

State executive councillor for sports development Mohd Khairuddin Othman said RM3 million is allocated to renovate the former Carlton Hotel building for that purpose, which is scheduled to complete by the end of the year.

“The state government is collaborating with the Selangor State Sports Council (MSNS), Selangor e-Sports Association (ESS), Selangor Football Association (FAS) and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).

“This effort allows us to design training modules to produce professional e-sports players,” he told the media after the launch of the 2021 Selangor Xtiv Virtual at the Selangor State Secretariat Building, here yesterday.

He said e-sports will soon become a career that provides lucrative income through competitive gaming.

Virtual sport development in Malaysia began through competitions at the local level organised by clubs before it was included in the 2018 Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Perak.

The country has also sent e-sports athletes to the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia and the 2019 SEA Games in Manila, Philippines.
