Selangor to go paperless, cashless parking starts next year

SHAH ALAM, March 12 — The use of parking coupons at all venues managed by local authorities in Selangor will come to an end on December 31.

Selangor state executive councillor for local government Ng Sze Han said the digital payment system using the Smart Selangor Parking (SSP) app to replace the manual payment method will be enforced on January 1, 2022.

“We will set up designated parking bays (hot zones) at areas with high traffic to place a limit to the maximum amount of time (allowed for parking),” Ng said on Facebook.

He said the administration will also develop an e-parking agent system as an alternative for people who do not own smartphones.

On Tuesday, Ng chaired a meeting to discuss the direction for the management of parking areas under the Selangor local authorities at the Wisma Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam (MBSA) to confirm the details of the matter.

The designated parking bays will be given a suitable name to be more user-friendly and will be enforced after the amendment to the schedule under the Road Transport Order (Car Parking Place Allocation) has been gazetted.

Incepted in July 2018, the Selangor smart parking system is widely used by local authorities in Selangor as well as the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

The mobile phone application was developed by Smart Selangor Delivery Unit in line with Selangor’s mission to become a smart state by year 2025.

To date, there are over 1.5 million users registered with the SSP.
